In this non-fiction work, Debra J. Rigas condenses 45 years of her life's journey - as a professional midwife, licensed sailor, traveler, filmmaker, artist, parent, and seeker - into stories and suggestions, as well as both light and dark 'spiritual' experiences that might help readers wise up and make better choices in their lives. The book includes short introductions to a list of 111 topics, systems, concepts and people frequently encountered by those exploring a spiritual path, as seen through her direct experience, studies, screenings, goofs and slants. Witches, ghosts, Native Americans, Celts, angels, art, orbs, prayer, the Divine Feminine, shamans, water, channeling and Kansas are among the list of items on which the author offers her practiced take. Rigas encourages readers to become adept at discerning while searching for their own ‘gurus’. A bit tongue-in-cheek throughout, moments spent in Greece, St. Lucia, Hawaii, Spain, Washington, or at computer monitors and the open ocean invite readers to think twice (or more!) about choosing from the gamut of paranormal and alternative offerings, while carefully selecting others who might help them along the way. What is a guru? A guru is a teacher – it could be anyone. Why do you need one? It depends on what you want to learn. What does a guru look like? How many are there? How will you know the best one for you? Who might be a fraud to avoid? Through humor and wisdom (sometimes hard won), the author shines a light on the 'new age' while asking you to consider picking up your own torch. Our world needs you...and your Guru...now. Set your ego aside, breathe deeply and dive in.

In 'paying it forward,' woman finds way to inspire others

This is "What Women Want" — and no, it doesn't involve Mel Gibson. "What Women Want" is a brand new, twice-monthly inspirational talk at Waterstreet Café at Battleship Cove. It features prominent women business owners, writers and other speakers who aim to inspire their fellow working women. "I wanted to bring in women speakers to boost other women in our community. Working women who have families feel spread thin these days. They wonder if they're doing the best they can. I know, because I'm one of them," said Janine Ouellette Sullivan, who started the series.
